A Visit with Arcuda: Art by Jeff Bear, Feb. 25 - Mar. 7, 2017

We would like to invite you to the latest art exhibition by Jeff Bear, "A Visit With Arcuda".

In Jeff Bear's own words:

I invite you to share my enjoyable life here in Athens.  Walk the streets with me as I wander about looking for undiscovered images.  See with me the beauty of our passing scene that others miss as they walk by.

Sit with me at home and view favourite artworks which I choose to hang on my walls.  Join me on my balcony for a coffee or a glass of wine and read the poetry I write there.  Pull up a chair, relax and let me share my art with you.  Here are over two hundred new images and a selection of my favourite creations.

Date & Time :

  • February 25 - March 7, 2017

Venue :

  • The Theater at ACS Athens (Lobby)

Opening :

  • Saturday, February 25, 2017 at 19:00 - 22:00

The Artwork

The 150 in One  -  These are all new images from the past year. They tend to be abstractions with the elements of colour, texture, line and form which I like to look for. They were taken in the streets of Athens, in Crete and in the UK in Wales and in Kent, where my Granddaughter lives.

The Street  -  I’ve always tried to look carefully where and when I walk.  Most people never look up or down or around as they progress through the streets of life.  Some don’t even look at all, perhaps distracted by things stuck in their ears.  They miss so much.  Even the street beneath your feet looks amazing when you really see it.

The Stuff from My Walls  -  The framed pieces, the small sculptures and the old prints were taken from the walls and shelves of my flat.  They are things I’ve done that I like enough to have in my house to look at daily.  To give you a feeling for my living space as you “visit,” I have noted where these works were in the flat.

“Pipe Dreams”, “in just spring” and “Such Stuff” all have sleeping themes and so hang in the bedroom.  They are from what I think of as my “Colour Doodle” period and pay homage to “catnip nights,” e.e. cummings and my favourite passage from Shakespeare’s Tempest.  Also in the bedroom, the “Trunk,” “Two Mirrors” and the “Last Fourth” are collages created to go with poems I wrote about my mother and father. “Calcium Replacement (Milk Bones)” came from a series “bones and butterflies.”  It is in the corner of the bedroom behind the door and serves to remind me of my hip replacements when the door is shut.  “Butterfly 4” from the living room also was from that series, but “Wayang,” facing the fireplace, was a reminder of the time we lived in Indonesia.  “Bali Sky” is some early computer art situated in our bathroom.  From the other loo, decorated with a nautical theme, comes “Beached in Hydra” and “Song of the Sea.” In the hall you would find “Sometimes,” another piece which followed a poem, and in the study hangs “Writer’s Block,” which may explain some of my poetry.  The wee sculptures, “Butterfly Landing,” “If a flower grows in the desert...,” “Mother Duck” and “The Artist”  are small whimsical pieces from various shelves selected in part with portability in mind.

On the Balcony  -  These images are to help you imagine what it would be like to visit my home.  The chair is where I sit on the balcony to do my writing.  The sunsets I’ve recorded over the years from our second balcony.  The best ones seem to occur during periods of high pollution.

Please sit in my chair and relax.  Read some of my poetry, and if you wish, write me a note about my work.  I’d love to hear what you see and think.
